Patients who take Fingolimod or better known under its brand name Gilenya can develop macular edema. Macular Edema is when the fluid in the back of the eye swells, causing blurry vision. These symptoms usually occur 3-6 months after starting Gilenya. Usually symptoms resolve with the discontinuation of the drug.
Before taking Gilenya, you will be required to have a dilated eye exam, and an OCT (optical coherence tomography) 3-4 months after starting treatment. If you have diabetes or uveitis you will have an increased risk for macular edema by using Gilenya.
Make sure to call San Antonio Eye Specialists for your exam prior to taking Gilenya.
