Diagnostic Technology

Diopsys NOVA-ERG (Electroretinography Testing)

The Diopsys NOVA-ERG is used by our doctors to detect AMD or Age-Related Macular Degeneration, damage caused by certain drugs such as Plaquenil (Plaquenil Maculopathy), diabetes, and/or Cystoid macular edema (CME) as well as a wide range of other disorders.

Electroretinography

Electroretinography (ERG) is a direct measure of retinal activity, particularly the macula and ganglion cells. ERG is a test that provides data intended to aid in detection of cellular dysfunction and diagnosis of visual problems, and may allow eye doctors to preempt visual problems before they occur. Many diseases like Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, and maculopathy of plaquenil-related etiology can be effectively managed with early detection, which is exactly what this tool provides.

Epic Automated Refracting Stations

Epic automated refracting stations are used to thoroughly evaluate our patient’s eyes from pre-op, to operation and/or to simply get a refractional reading. If the patient has astigmatism, or shows an irregular eye, it can also help us determine the best surgical outcome for the patient.

Heidelberg Retina Tomograph

We are excited to offer our patients this technology for diagnosing early stages of glaucoma as well as to measure the progress of the disease. The Heidelberg is pivotal to our Glaucoma Study.

Konan Specular Microscopy

The Konan Specular Microscope is a unique device that can accurately measure a patient’s endothelium cell thickness. It can help us determine if a patient might have endothelium cell damage, which could lead to vision loss. The endothelial cells are the inner most layer of the cornea and can be as thin as one cell thick. They maintain the eyes fluid balance to ensure clear vision. Unlike most cells in the human body, endothelial cells cannot replicate. With certain eye diseases like Fuchs’ dystrophy, the endothelial cells become damaged and turn cloudy, causing visual loss.

NIDEK OPD III

NIDEK OPD III is a cornea analyser and wavefront abarometer. With the help of this technology, it can help us get personalized eye readings of our patient’s eyes during the day and night. Depending on the pupillometer (pupil readings), it can determine exact prescriptions for our patients.

Pentacam

The Most Sophisticated Testing for Refractive Surgery. The Pentacam provides crisp images of the cornea, iris and crystalline lens. The device uses a rotating Scheimpflug camera to measure 25,000 true elevation points in less than two seconds. It also can provide cataract analysis and clearly detect corneal disorders such as keratoconus and corneal ectasia, where laser vision correction is not recommended.

Visual Evoked Potential

Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) measures the nervous impulses traveling from the retina to the visual cortex. Light that enters the eye ultimately falls on the retina, a photosensitive nervous tissue at the back of the eye. From there, a message is conducted through nervous tissue (e.g. the optic nerve) until it falls on the brain’s occipital lobe, which is actually located on the posterior portion of the brain. On this lobe lies the visual cortex, where information that reaches the brain is cognized as vision. VEP provides specific information about the electrical impulses conducted through the nervous tissue, including metrics like impulse strength and speed. This can provide valuable insight to potential visual problems that was previously unavailable to eye care specialists.

Zeiss Atlas Topography

The Zeiss Atlas Topographer provides our doctors with the data needed to determine the health of a patient’s cornea. The cornea is the clear “window” on the front surface of the eye. It’s one of the two main focusing lenses of the eye. This technology can detect corneal dystrophies, astigmatism, irregular astigmatism, pellucid degeneration and other diseases such as keratoconus. The Zeiss Atlas topographer is also no-touch, and only takes a few minutes to perform.

Zeiss Cirrus OCT (Posterior Segment)

San Antonio Eye Specialists is excited to offer the Cirrus OCT, manufactured by Carl Zeiss, to our patients. This OCT or (Ocular Coherence Tomography) is used to take high-resolution images and measurements of the optic nerve, fovea, retina, and cornea. These 3-D images can be used to diagnose eye diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. This is one of the most advanced posterior segment diagnostic devices available. It can take over 27,000 images at one time, versus 400 with previous models.

The test only takes a few minutes and is non-contact, so there is no discomfort.

Zeiss Fundus Photography (VisucamLite)

San Antonio Eye Specialists is proud to offer our patients the next level in non-mydriatic color fundus photography. Non-mydriatic means a photo of your retina can be taken without dilation through pupils as small as 3.3 mm. The high-quality system produces images to help in diagnosing eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Ziemer Galilei G4

We are excited to have one of the most accurate diagnostic tools in the industry, the Ziemer Galilei G4. This device is critical in refractive or laser vision correction surgery. It allows our doctors to obtain precise corneal thickness, corneal curvature and also screens for keratoconus. This device also evaluates the corneal surface to check for any abnormalities, and measures higher order aberrations.

Zeiss Humphrey Visual Field

The Zeiss Humphrey Visual Field is the gold standard in diagnoses and monitoring blind spots in a patient’s vision caused from eye diseases such as glaucoma. Recent advancements have made this test even more accurate and the test can often be performed in just minutes.

Zeiss IOL Master

At San Antonio Eye Specialists, we offer our cataract patients the precision of the Zeiss IOL Master. This advanced technology allows our surgeons to take precise measurements within the eye, which ensures the most accurate measurements for selecting the appropriate intraocular lens power for our patients’ undergoing cataract surgery. Choosing the right lens is critical for good visual outcomes.

Zeiss IOL Master 700

At San Antonio Eye Specialists, we are proud to use the Zeiss IOL Master 700, the next-generation in biometry to help reduce the risk of refractive surprises in our patients. The Zeiss Master 700 is fully integrated with the Barret Suite. The Barrett Suite is fully integrated with the Barrett Universal II, Barrett Toric, and Barrett True-K influencing the posterior corneal surface. Together with Swept Source Biometry, this technolgy helps to detect unusual eye geometries, poor fixation and confirm eye measurements.

Zeiss Visante OCT (Anterior Segment)

Our doctors can now diagnose patients with corneal disorders or diseases, narrow angles leading to glaucoma, and detect other corneal abnormalities using the Zeiss Visante OCT. This OCT is an advanced anterior segment diagnostic tool developed by Carl Zeiss Meditech. It provides remarkable, high-definition images of the cornea and anterior chamber, which is important for surgeons to determine laser vision correction candidacy and other surgical procedures. Just like our Zeiss Cirrus OCT, this test only takes a few minutes to complete and is no-touch, so there is no discomfort.
